Community groups and local businesses in County Kildare have been approved for grant assistance of over €1.3 million euro in LEADER funding since the programme commenced in 2017.
The programme is gaining significant momentum in Kildare and approximately 33% of the overall project budget is now committed. A wide range of projects have been approved for grant assistance including rural tourism projects, enterprise projects and community and youth facilities.
Rural Development Programme Manager with CKLP, Brian Kelly, said:
‘We are currently seeking expressions of interest for the development of artisan-food enterprises. 2018 saw high interest in youth and community facility projects. This year have significant funding available for Rural Tourism and Local Biodiversity projects. If you have a project in mind we encourage you to get in touch. Our dedicated team are happy to help you’.
Two pivotal community projects which were recently approved are the Clane Athletic Club All Weather Running Track and Rathcoffey GAA Community Walkway.
Clane Athletic Club is a rapidly developing club with a growing membership base of over 300 members. Thanks to LEADER grant aid the club is now in the process of installing an all-weather athletic track to retain members and to grow and diversify their membership base and work is well underway. The track will also be available to all local schools and clubs as well as those who want a safe secure place to walk, jog or run. The Kildare LCDC has approved LEADER funding of over €136,796 towards this project. Chairman of Clane Athletic Club said:
‘We earnestly believe that the provision of this community athletic track will give people an enhanced means to garner a lifelong passion for health and well-being. We are passionate about sharing the benefits of athletics to the people of Clane and surrounding areas’.
Rathcoffey GAA has recently constructed a 1km walkway around the perimeter of their club grounds. LEADER funding of €33,658 was approved by the Kildare LCDC towards the floodlighting of the new community walkway. Secretary of the Rathcoffey GAA, John Cleary said:
‘The walkway is available to everyone in the community, providing a floodlit safe facility off busy public roads which also has full disability access for people to walk or run all-year round. The approval of LEADER funding enables us to help promote healthier living and regular exercise to all in our community. I found the LEADER staff very helpful and efficient. If we had a problem – a phone call or email to Brain Kelly or his team always led to great advice and guidance and the problem was solved.”
The delivery of the LEADER programme has changed from previous programmes and County Kildare LEADER Partnership (CKLP) now implements the programme on behalf of Kildare Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) and Kildare County Council as financial partner.
