Better Basics Boosting Reading Programme

What volunteers need to know!

Better Basics Boosting Reading is a volunteer led reading support programme for children, between second and fifth class, in primary school. The programme supports children who have developed basic reading skills and need practice to further improve their reading ability.

Through the programme volunteers support children with their reading twice a week, for fifteen minutes. The programme takes place over fifteen weeks and requires volunteers to follow a specific procedure which aims to achieve accelerated reading outcomes for the children. Volunteers are asked to deliver the programme to a minimum of 2 children in the school over the course of the programme (sessions run  consecutively).

Volunteers will receive two days of training delivered in the CKLP offices in Jigginstown Naas. The training usually takes place in September and volunteers are required to attend both dates. Volunteers will also be asked to comply with Garda Vetting in the school they are assigned to, and to complete the Children First Online training at home and which takes approximately 1 hour.

Participating schools are located across Co. Kildare and can vary from year to year. In the academic year 2019/2020 schools from; Celbridge, Kildare Town, Naas and Newbridge were engaged in the programme.

Volunteers will be supported and mentored throughout the fifteen week programme, and interested volunteers should contact Áine Byrne in County Kildare LEADER Partnership.
